Definition

In October 1969, Post Office Telecommunication became a separated and independent from UK Post Office. By that year a Post Office Act was passed down so as to give efficient and better kind of telephone services to people and not just to run this kind of services. With such Post Office Act, each telecommunication organizations are in need of put attention on their field or respective services so as to provide better management to people. If considering the law, Post Office Telecommunication had enjoyed the opportunity on running and operating United Kingdom national telecommunication network. Moreover, they also have the capability of providing licenses to other service providers.

Development

In the 1970’s, Post Office has experience great development and expansion. Exchanges become modernized and expanded. In addition, there was creation of new kind of telecom sevices such as the STD as well as international dialing, these new services were added which made the services even better. As early as 1970’s, telecom users or consumers from cities can dial and call directy Western Europe, United States and even Canada and by the end of the decade, almost all telecommunication subscribers from all over the world can call directly. There was also the development of System X digital switching platform and installation of the very first digital exchanges. However, progress came at a price. Conservatives, a political party in UK, have made its plan to separate all at once the Post Office from telecom by 1979. This decision was made due to the ideological preference as well as giving of good reason or explanation on the policy or rules on the scale of investment which is needed for UK to remain as one of the global competitor in terms of communication services and management. Later on, in the year 1981, British Telecommunication Act was passed and October of that same year the service now became British Telecom.

Records

It was BT Archives that held the records of the Post Office Corporation from the year 1969 up to 1981. They also held the predecessors which include Post Office Telegraph and Telephone Service from 1864 to 1969 as well as other exclusive telephone and telegraph firms.

BT Archives

BT Archives or British Telecom Archives were the ones which held the earliest records coming from those of the Electric Telegraph Company in 1846. They also held other records of other private telegraph firms such as British Electric Telegraph Company, Submarine Telegraph, United Kingdom Electric Telegraph CompanyCompany and more.

British Telecom Archives also held records of the exclusive telephone companies as well as the Post Office telephone services like for example Lancashire and Cheshire Telephonic Exchange Company, Limited Telephone Company Limited (Bell's Patents), United Telephone Company, Western Counties and South Wales Telephone Company and more. Apart from these, British Telecom Archives also holds private documents which are related to the services of United Kingdom telegraph of the British Post Office which became under the control of Post Office in 1870.
